In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling meadows, lived a shepherd boy. His life was essentially pure, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was essentially to look after his herd of sheep.

Their soft bleating and the whispering of the breezes across the single tree on the hilltop were his only associates. Day after day, watching over his responsibilities inculcated in him here a feeling of quiet fulfillment.

But, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. In one such instance from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty plot.

Narratives of predators prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy decided to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.

One afternoon he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills for rescue but found no wolf.

The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank laughed for a few more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.

The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is hard to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
